Amongst your switches at Admin Panel -> Settings -> Switches is an "online total for each category" option. When enabled, the number of people currently browsing each category will be displayed next to the category. This involves extra database queries, and the regular updates to the categories table make the cache system less effective, so it can slow down your site and increase load if you have a busy site. Use with caution.
