The "toplist on front page" switch at Admin Panel -> Settings -> Switches controls whether the list of most recent listings is shown on the front [index] page. If you'd rather not have it, switch it off. Switching it off will make the page slightly faster and free up space for your other content. It's better to switch it off here than to edit it out of the template, because this way you'll have less recustomizing to do if you have to redo the template in the future.
