The "indirect linking" switch decides whether people clicking the link provided in the image bit are taken to the image details page or directly to the external URL of the website listed (this only applies when there is a URL associated, of course). If you turn the switch on, people are taken to the details page first where they can click again to get to the external site. If you turn the switch off, people can go directly to the external site without seeing the details page.
