Among your switches you have an option for similar categories. When activated, this displays a list (in the 'show articles in category' template) of categories which resemble the one being viewed. This option requires MySQL 4.1+ as the list is generated by a MySQL fulltext search.
To display similar categories in other spots you can copy the template code to any template, as long as it's somewhere that a category logically applies.
