To perform mass alterations, see the 'advanced options' page of your admin panel. These options allow you to rapidly replace one value with another in your database.
For example, if you wish to set all articles which have more than 200 hits to be the article type 'popular' you could do that by selecting the appropriate options. Change the first selector to 'type', write 'popular' in the box, choose 'hits' and 'is larger than' in the next two selectors, and write '200' in the final box. The screen now reads "For all articles, set type to popular where the current hits is larger than 200." When you press 'perform alterations' all the articles with more than 200 hits will be moved to the new article group.
